What is Dynamic Resharding?
In simple terms, resharding means the blockchain can split itself into more pieces (shards) to handle more traffic — automatically, without any human involvement. Dynamic resharding ensures that when a shard hits a state size threshold, it splits deterministically and is validated by state witnesses with no human intervention.
This is a huge leap from how most blockchains work today, where scaling requires manual upgrades and causes network disruptions.
Where does it stand now?
NEAR Protocol announced network upgrade 2.13 coming in June 2026, which will introduce post-quantum-safe signing and NEAR Intents' automated sharding — called dynamic resharding — to improve the network infrastructure.
This isn't coming out of nowhere either. In 2025, NEAR scaled its mainnet infrastructure from six to nine shards, raising throughput by 50%. With dynamic resharding now active, the network can adjust its structure as demand increases, offering a route to horizontal scalability without disrupting application performance.
