Shatsky Lakes is a group of water bodies in the Volyn region. In a picturesque place by Lake Lyutsymir lies the small town of Shatsk. The entire area is also called Shatske Polissya. It was here that in 1983 the Shatsky National Natural Park was created, covering an area of 32,500 hectares. Despite the fact that there are more than 30 lakes in the water park, only 22 are the most famous and largest. The first version states that all the lakes were formed more than 100 thousand years ago, specifically after the retreat of the Dnieper glacier. At that time, a large water body formed in this area, which over time transformed into several dozen lakes. Near Lake Lyutsymir lies the small town of Shatsk. The second version claims that all the water bodies here are of karst origin. Their different depths are a result of tectonic plate movements. The third version suggests that the lakes were formed as a result of the rise in the level of groundwater in the marshy area while simultaneously accumulating alluvium. Today, Shatsky Lakes is one of the most popular tourist water attractions in Ukraine. Every year, more than 10,000 tourists come here.
