Initial thoughts on today’s Fed press conference: 👀 • Three FOMC members dissented on the rate cut. Goolsbee and Schmid opposed cutting, while Governor Miran wanted a deeper 0.5 percent cut. The remaining nine members supported the 0.25 percent move. $LUNA • Powell said rates could stay unchanged, move lower, or fall more aggressively next year depending on the data. He emphasized: “I don’t think rate hikes are anyone’s baseline.” $LRC • Fed has not made any decision for the January meeting. • Powell noted recent employment data may have been overstated by roughly 60,000 jobs per month. He believes the US is now at the high end of the neutral rate range. • On AI, Powell said impacts could go both ways: job displacement or productivity boosts, higher output and corporate profits. • On tariffs, full effects will be clearer in Q1 2026. He doesn’t expect a major inflation impact - likely a one-time bump that fades. • Regarding the upcoming 40B USD T-bill purchases, Powell stressed this is not QE. The goal is to stabilize money markets and ensure sufficient bank reserves. • Powell’s term as Fed Chair ends in May. He has not decided whether he will stay on as a Governor afterward. Overall tone: neutral with a dovish lean. Fears of a “hawkish cut” did not materialize. The dot plot showing only one cut in 2026 shouldn’t be taken as fixed - Fed expectations have changed dramatically even within weeks. With a potential new Chair and shifting macro conditions, the outlook for 2026 is far from set.
