ETH's value is driven by its core utility and two essential network upgrades. 1. Core Utility: The World Computer Ethereum was launched as a platform for smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps), as detailed in its 2013 whitepaper. Pioneering Role: It created the universal ERC-20 token standard, enabling Decentralized Finance (DeFi) and NFTs. Massive Demand: High network activity requires ETH to pay network transaction fees, driving consistent demand. 2. The Supply Shock: EIP-1559 and The Merge Two major upgrades created the ETH supply shock: A. The Burning Mechanism (EIP-1559) The London Hard Fork (August 2021) implemented EIP-1559: Base Fee Burning: A portion of the transaction fee is permanently burned (removed from circulation). Deflationary Pressure: High network usage burns more ETH, exerting deflationary pressure. B. The Issuance Cut (The Merge) The Merge (September 15, 2022) switched to Proof-of-Stake (PoS).
