Thousands of people in Sweden have chosen to implant tiny electronic chips in their hands as a practical alternative to traditional cards and keys.
The chip, which is no larger than a grain of rice, is implanted under the skin between the thumb and index finger, enabling users to open doors, use transportation, verify their identity, and store or share digital data simply by passing their hand near a reading device.

This technology relies on passive RFID and NFC chips, meaning they only work when in very close proximity to the reader, and they do not contain a battery or tracking system or GPS. Its spread in Sweden began in 2015, particularly among technology workers and innovation communities, and its use later expanded in workplaces and tech centers.

Medically, these implants are classified as low risk when performed by specialists, as they are made from biocompatible materials and do not require complex surgical intervention. Despite ongoing debates about privacy and long-term social implications, their adoption is entirely voluntary without any government or institutional mandate. With the number of users reaching several thousand, Sweden has become a real-life model for the experience of human integration with technology in daily life.
