The Aleo community is united around a simple concept: we deserve a more secure internet, and a private-by-default zero-knowledge web is the way to get there.

This journey began with the launch of Aleo Testnet 1 in 2020 and has seen incredible milestones, including the largest launch event in blockchain history, numerous testnets, and various incentive programs. These initiatives have tested Aleo’s technical architecture, validated its cryptoeconomic design, and fostered a vibrant ecosystem of developers, attesters, miners, and ambassadors.

Aleo has grown into an inspiring community with over 500,000 active Discord members, over 10,000 deployed programs, and over 300 Aleo Ambassadors. The Aleo Network Foundation has awarded 40 million Aleo Points and over $8 million in rewards to the community through various programs that help strengthen the network.

Today, we celebrate the community’s contributions to the Aleo mission, especially their commitment to advancing ZK technology through our incentivized testnets, competitions, and initiatives.

Testnet 1

2020

Aleo Systems was founded by Howard Wu, Michael Beller, Collin Chin, and Raymond Chu in December 2019. It aims to be the “first fully private application platform”, providing zero-knowledge encryption and programming tools for blockchain developers.

In June 2020, Aleo released its developer preview, which includes Aleo Studio and its Leo v1 coding language. In August, it also launched testnet1, an implementation of the ZEXE research paper.

Aleo Launch Ceremony

August 2021

The Aleo launch event was a milestone in blockchain history, recognized as the largest multi-party computation (MPC) inspired by Zcash’s Powers of Tau. More than 2,200 global participants contributed to secure Aleo’s underlying zkSNARKs, laying the foundation for decentralized private computation (DPC) functionality. This setup laid the foundation for Aleo’s general, internal, and external setup, ensuring the network is strong and secure.

Testnet 2

2021 - 2022

Testnet2 was launched in 2021, with provers running over 10,000 nodes and producing millions of zero-knowledge proofs (more than any other platform in history), testing the network’s technical architecture and validating its cryptographic ergonomics.

During Testnet2, the team fixed key consensus issues, including the architectural change from the original Nakamoto consensus to ASERT, and established multiple mining pools to distribute hash rate and ensure network control and accountability.

In Aleo, miners and provers earn 15 million Aleo points for successfully mining blocks, contributing to the Aleo codebase, and leveraging new types of hardware (such as GPUs) to improve the performance of zero-knowledge proofs.

Testnet 2 Incentive Program

January 2022

Testnet 2 incentives include rewards for active mining nodes, generous rewards for the top 100 miners, recognition for developers who merge GitHub pull requests, and specific rewards for pool beta testers and registered pool operators.

Testnet 3

2022 - 2023

Testnet3 marks a significant advancement over Testnet2. Most importantly, it brings a new consensus algorithm, AleoBFT, which combines the Proof-of-Stake consensus algorithm (based on DiemBFT) with a work-based attestor compensation scheme. It also introduces deployment and execution, allowing developers to deploy ZK programs and interact with users on Aleo. It involves two phases of community contribution incentives: the attestor incentive program and the deployment incentive program.

Prover Incentive Program

January 2023

In January 2023, Aleo concluded its testnet3 program, which was focused on incentivizing provers to participate in ZK proof generation, following the introduction of the new AleoBFT. Over the course of eight weeks, Aleo saw over 44,000 provers from over 94 countries around the world connected to the network. The coinbase_target (analogous to network difficulty) peaked at around 750 million proofs per second (PPS). This validated the hypothesis that separating block production from coinbase generation allows provers to compute proofs at the scale they want, and that multiple proof pools help make proofs more accessible.

Deployment Incentive Program

August 2023

Aleo has launched a testnet3 deployment incentive program to encourage developers to write and deploy applications on the network. The community aims to drive organic usage of the Aleo protocol and create an initial set of useful programs for its on-chain program registry.

The Deployment Incentive Program is designed to encourage developers to write and deploy applications on the Aleo network. The program received more than 1,000 valid submissions, narrowed down to 130 unique GitHub repositories, and awarded 6 million Aleo points to quality projects.

Prover Incentive Program II

July 2024

The goal of Prover Incentive II is to validate the coinbase reward mechanism and related puzzles. After the puzzle design is completed, the program aims to encourage provers to participate in the verification process. The Aleo Network Foundation will run on Testnet Beta from July 1 to 15, 2024, offering 1 million points as rewards to participants.

Events and Community Engagement

Aleo is committed to advancing ZK technology through various initiatives and competitions, ranging beyond the testnet to include the Ambassador Program, ZPrize, zkML, and Enigma.

Aleo Ambassador Program

2022

The Ambassador Program was established to foster a community of people who can create high-quality, useful content about Aleo (both technical and non-technical). Since its inception, over 415 people have taken on this role to showcase outstanding contributions from community members. After the mainnet launch, the Ambassador Program will play an active role in network governance.

ZPrize 

2022 | 2023

The inaugural ZPrize competition was launched in 2022 by Alex Pruden of Aleo and several prominent Web3 builders, with more than 30 companies sponsoring over $7 million in prizes. The inaugural ZPrize competition had three goals:

1. Improve the baseline performance of key general algorithms

2. Increase the diversity and availability of low-level cryptographic proof libraries

3. Raise awareness of the breakthrough potential of zero-knowledge encryption

The results were transformative, with average improvements ranging from 2.3x to 11.3x across categories. Submissions are open source and hosted on ZPrize Github. The ZPrize competition delivered significant improvements in latency, throughput, and efficiency, setting a new benchmark for the industry.

zkML 

May 2023

The zkML (zero-knowledge machine learning) initiative is another innovative endeavor at Aleo that focuses on combining machine learning with zero-knowledge proofs. Aleo’s zkML initiative aims to support projects that enhance the field of machine learning using zero-knowledge proofs, while providing valuable support to developers seeking to build solutions in this space.

Enigma 

December 2023

Aleo launched its first game, Enigma, at Devconnect in 2023. Enigma is a series of events and workshops designed to bring together the brightest minds in ZK technology. Developers come together to solve complex puzzles built on Aleo and compete for winning prizes.

Mainnet

2024

Aleo is approaching its much-anticipated mainnet launch. Over the past five years, our developer community has worked hard to help us realize our vision of a zero-knowledge web, with privacy and security as top priorities.

Aleo took significant precautions in preparation for launch by hiring three independent security research firms (Trail of Bits, NCC Group, and zkSecurity) to audit snarkOS and snark VM, the backbone of the Aleo network. You can view the results and solutions from that audit, which took place over 18 weeks in 2023. We conducted additional audits in 2024, including ARC-41 as well as other critical fixes and improvements.

In addition, the Aleo Network Foundation was established in December 2023 to guide and support Aleo in becoming a fully decentralized open source network. Its main initiatives include developer education, funding programs, and product incubation.

Next step

The years of work that hundreds of thousands of people around the world have put into bringing the Aleo Network to mainnet is nothing short of extraordinary — and there will still be ample opportunity to build together in this exciting new phase for Aleo.

Aleo’s testnet and incentive periods have been critical to advancing the development of a secure and private zero-knowledge network.
