Bitcoin (BTC) is a digital currency designed for peer-to-peer transactions that aims to operate as a medium of exchange independent of any central authority. BTC can be transferred electronically in a secure, verifiable, and immutable manner.
BTC was launched in 2009, and it is the first virtual currency to solve the double-spending problem by timestamping transactions before broadcasting them to all nodes in the Bitcoin network. The Bitcoin protocol provided a solution to the Byzantine generals' problem through the blockchain network structure, a concept first proposed by Stuart Haber and W. Scott Stornetta in 1991.
