On December 7, 2025, the ZKsync team announced the planned discontinuation of support for ZKsync Lite (known as ZKsync 1.0) in 2026. This original ZK-rollup, launched on Ethereum in June 2020 by Matter Labs, was the first of its kind and served as a proof of concept for network scaling. Lite focused on fast payments: token transfers, atomic swaps, and NFT minting, but did not support smart contracts, which limited its capabilities compared to modern rollups.
The development of ZKsync Lite stopped back in March 2023 with the emergence of ZKsync Era — a full-fledged zkEVM that allows executing any smart contracts without compromising Ethereum's security. According to L2BEAT, about $50 million in user assets remains on Lite, but the network processes fewer than 200 transactions per day. The team assures: funds are safe, withdrawals to L1 Ethereum will work seamlessly, and a full migration plan, timelines, and recommendations will be available over the next year. No immediate actions are needed — the network continues to function normally.
This step is the "decent sunset" for the pioneer of ZK technologies, which paved the way for Elastic Network and ZK Stack. It highlights the evolution of Ethereum L2: from simple payments to full-fledged ecosystems like Era, Starknet, or Polygon zkEVM. For the community, this is a signal of focus on innovations, where old prototypes give way to mature solutions, enhancing scalability and security.
