AI Data Centers Overtake Bitcoin Miners in Texas Power Demand
Texas’ energy demand is now led by AI facilities, signaling a shift from previous Bitcoin mining dominance and raising grid reliability questions.
Texas is experiencing a major shift in energy demand, with AI data centers now driving large-load requests on the state grid, surpassing the former dominance of Bitcoin miners. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) reports that 73% of new large-load interconnection requests are from AI facilities, highlighting rapid growth in GPU-powered computing.
This surge has outpaced power supply, as most new generation projects rely on solar and battery systems, which cannot provide continuous output for AI workloads. Regulators are responding by creating special handling rules for large customers and reviewing more transmission projects to maintain grid stability.
Interestingly, many former Bitcoin mining sites, including Mike Novogratz’s Galaxy project, are being repurposed for AI computing, reflecting the evolving landscape of high-demand energy users in Texas.
