A meme coin called HERO has become more popular in recent days. This coin was created in honor of a man who helped disarm one of the two attackers during a deadly attack at a Hanukkah party in Sydney, Australia, last weekend.
The token briefly reached a market capitalization of $1.7 million. The team behind the project states that all income for the creators will be donated to the victims of the attack.
HERO launched in support of Bondi victims
An initiative from the community gained extra attention after the terrorist attack at Bondi Beach on Sunday. This incident resulted in 15 fatalities and at least 42 others injured.
Someone named DefiANT on X launched the HERO meme coin as a tribute to Ahmed al-Ahmed. He is a 43-year-old greengrocer who managed to disarm one of the attackers during the incident.
According to DexScreener, HERO operates on Solana and the market capitalization is now approximately $180,000. The meme coin was created via Pump.Fun and reached nearly $1.7 million in market capitalization. Although the coin was launched on the same day as the attack, the original developer withdrew and left the project.
Since then, the community has taken over the management of the token, with DefiANT now being the main driving force. The initiative is now fully taken over by the community and all proceeds go to supporting the victims.
In addition to the token, the team also launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the victims of the attack.
According to the fundraising page, nearly 40,000 donors have raised over $2.3 million together. The goal of the campaign is $3.1 million.
The official HERO website states that donations will be distributed in multiple parts to the victims. DefiANT has confirmed on social media that $47,000 AUD has already been donated to those affected by the attack.
