I shorted ZEC once and almost ate my keyboard.
In November last year, ZEC doubled in three days, and the group was flooded with red screens.
I looked at the K-line like a rocket, and in a moment of excitement, I thought: "Isn't this a long squeeze?"
So I went in with 10x leverage, placing a short order of 10U, humming to myself: "At least I'll make enough for an electric bike if it falls."
But the coin price kept soaring, and my account was glowing green. I comforted myself: "It's okay, just a spike."
The next day, I woke up to a liquidation text that was more punctual than my alarm clock—10U turned into 0.1U, not even enough to cover the fees.
I sat there dazed with my cat, who walked away in disdain.
Later, upon review, I realized:
1. The leaderboard for gains = retail FOMO harvesting machine; going short simply fuels the bulls;
2. During those two days, 70% of ZEC's circulating supply was locked up, and the market makers could easily squeeze shorts with a single bullish candle;
3. The funding rate dropped to -0.8%, and I was paying money nightly for the other side to sing karaoke, getting thinner and thinner;
4. I wanted to short the top, but it shot straight into outer space; rationality in the face of madness is just a piece of toilet paper.
After some painful reflection, I wrote "shorting gains" on a sticky note and put it on the edge of my screen, resisting the urge no matter how red it got.
The strategy changed to:
- Only consider when trading volume shrinks to a flatline;
- Use small positions with options to buy puts, losses only limited to the premium;
- Spend the remaining money on milk tea to calm my nerves; sweetness can heal the wounds of leverage.
When the market goes crazy, even your own mother won't recognize you; we small retail traders shouldn't stand in front of the train and provoke it.
You can be bearish, but first learn to dodge before you learn to earn.
Those who survive the market and still make money are always the ones who dare to reach out first.
