$XRP hit a 52-week high of $3.65 this summer but has yet to crack the $4 mark.

In July, concerns over XRP’s highly centralized coin supply came to the forefront, adding to investor caution. The long-running SEC lawsuit against Ripple (XRP) also remains unresolved, keeping a cloud of uncertainty over the token.

Even so, $XRP (CRYPTO: XRP) is up 47% in 2025, outperforming Bitcoin’s (CRYPTO: BTC) 25% gain and making it the year’s best-performing major cryptocurrency. On paper, it looks like a winning bet — but beneath the strong price action are three issues that could cap further upside.

Centralized coin supply
XRP’s circulating supply sits at 59 billion coins, but ownership is far from evenly distributed. The top 10 wallets control 41% of all XRP, and the top 20 wallets hold 50%.

Adding to the concentration, just 663 wallets hold at least 5 million $XRP each — a combined total of roughly 3 billion tokens, or about 5% of the circulating supply. Many of these large holdings are believed to be controlled by Ripple insiders, further fueling centralization concerns.
