🇪🇸 PALEONTOLOGY: They find in Teruel the largest marine “scorpion” fossil in the world 🦂🌊
Spain becomes the epicenter of world paleontology. A team from the Geological and Mining Institute (IGME), led by Samuel Zamora and Fernando Ari, discovered in Teruel (Aragón) the fossil remains of a colossal predatory arthropod belonging to the eurypterids group (popularly known as marine scorpions), which measured an incredible length of 2.5 meters and weighed over 150 kilos 📊.
The specimen inhabited the region’s estuaries and freshwater river ecosystems during the Early Devonian period, about 400 million years ago 🌍.
Its anatomy, perfectly adapted for fast swimming in shallow waters, included a rigid shell and powerful pincers to capture prey.
The find, which topples the historic dominance of sites in Germany, happened by chance on land intended for the construction of a wind farm 🌬️.
Due to its incalculable scientific value and the risk of looting by private collectors, the exact location of the site remains under strict state secrecy, while experts prepare new excavations to recover the complete adult specimen.
