Grayscale Investment Trust was established by Digital Currency Group in 2013. DCG is one of the most powerful investment institutions in the cryptocurrency space, and you can find its presence in almost all of the major exchanges and projects you know.
As a subsidiary of DCG, Grayscale manages several funds including BTC and ETH, both of which have received SEC certification, making them the only two choices for institutional legal investment and retail investors in the US stock market.
Grayscale holdings refer to a form of investment where fund managers use the funds within the fund to invest in stocks or bonds, representing a process where users anticipate a rise in the stock. This is generally applied in fund investments and is a common operational method within fund investing. Grayscale holdings mean that investors are acquiring cryptocurrencies held by Grayscale Trust. Grayscale Trust is an institutional-level investment tool that allows individuals and institutions to gain exposure to the explosive returns of the cryptocurrency market in a relatively simple manner. This holding method is commonly used in long-term investment strategies for mainstream cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, featuring risk diversification, leverage effects, and convenient trading characteristics, providing investors with diversified investment options and profit opportunities.

Soon after FIL was launched, it was included in Grayscale Fund’s holdings. On March 15, 2021, Grayscale established the FIL trust product, purchasing for the first time around $80 on March 17. Over the next two years, Grayscale spent a total of $10.27 million on 34 purchases of FIL, acquiring about 110,000 FIL, with the highest purchase price at $170 and the lowest at $19, costing approximately $90.

Subsequently, in the year 2024, there were 32 increases in FIL holdings; a total of 1,752,029 FIL were added, with significant purchases on March 29, 2024 (351,900 FIL), April 10, 2024 (101,800 FIL), April 27, 2024 (199,800 FIL), and May 29, 2024 (293,700 FIL).

Why did Grayscale start to buy FIL in large quantities again? Professional institutions prefer to conduct 'right-side trading' during bottom intervals, meaning they enter once they confirm a trend has started. Thus, they are not buying at the 'lowest point' but rather at a point of 'certainty'. Perhaps Grayscale sees the current situation as the bottom interval for FIL. Although the fundamentals have not improved significantly, they are not expected to worsen, and the certainty of an upward trend has increased, prompting them to continue accumulating shares. Grayscale's 350,000 purchases are enough to prove that Wall Street has a strong consensus.

Note: Grayscale will not sell the digital assets managed by its trust; currently, there is no redemption mechanism. The reduction in holdings (negative numbers) in the chart is due to the annual fee deducted periodically by Grayscale. The total scale of assets managed by Grayscale Trust changes with the price of cryptocurrencies.
