🔥 Anthropic has officially banned the use of OAuth tokens from Claude subscriptions (Pro/Max) in third-party tools like OpenClaw.
Previously, many people ran the powerful OpenClaw agent through a cheap Claude subscription, receiving a ton of tokens for a fixed price. Now, this directly violates the Terms of Service. Anthropic has blocked such connections (the server blocks began in January, and they updated the policy in February).
Why did they do this?
OpenClaw consumes millions of tokens at a time. Subscriptions aren't designed for this volume, which has severely impacted Anthropic's margins. The company wants everyone to use the official Claude Code or pay with API keys (which is 5-10 times more expensive).
What does this mean for the AI community?
For heavy OpenClaw users, this is a pain: now they either switch to the official Claude Code or buy API keys. A win for Anthropic in terms of control and revenue, but a blow to the popularity of their models in the open-source ecosystem.
Many are already looking for alternatives (other agents + models from OpenAI, Grok, Gemini, etc.).
This is a classic big tech move: they let users play around with it for a while, and then shut the door when it becomes too profitable for users.
