The recent announcement by the National Tax Agency of Japan regarding the tax investigation results on cryptocurrency assets has drawn industry attention.
Data shows that from July 2024 to June 2025, the tax authorities will conduct 613 field investigations on individual cryptocurrency asset transactions, with a total additional tax amounting to 4.6 billion yen, a significant year-on-year increase of 31.4%, and the amount of additional tax per case is notably higher than the average income tax level. Meanwhile, the total amount of declared omissions identified in the investigation reached as high as 15.6 billion yen, reflecting significant shortcomings in tax compliance among some investors.
The National Tax Agency has clearly pointed out three core risk points: first, trading on multiple exchanges without consolidated reporting. Many investors, due to operations spread across multiple platforms, failed to accurately summarize all trading income; second, improper handling of DeFi business and empty asset treatment. Due to the special form of income from such assets, investors have insufficient understanding of the reporting rules, which can easily lead to underreporting or misreporting; third, errors in the timing of counting mining and staking income, which were not accurately calculated according to tax law regulations regarding the attribution period of income.
The tax authorities emphasize that income from cryptocurrency transactions is taxable income, and non-compliance in reporting will face severe penalties: those who fail to report may be subject to an additional tax of up to 20%, and if deemed to be intentionally concealing information, the reassessed tax rate can be as high as 40%.
The implementation of this investigation and the new penalty regulations marks the beginning of a strict and meticulous phase of tax collection management in Japan's cryptocurrency sector, also delineating compliance boundaries for investors, compelling market participants to strengthen tax compliance awareness and standardize reporting processes. #加密市场反弹 $BTC$ETH
